Hidehiko TAJIMA – Ordinary Wonderful Days
16 January – 27 February 2010

“What a wonderful world” 2009
Hidehiko Tajima creates works that directly appeal to the visual senses, where splendor and peril coexist at the intersection of the ordinary and the extraordinary.
His practice ranges from two-dimensional pieces incorporating flashing lights to three-dimensional objects and installations made by altering and transforming colorful plastic toys.
This exhibition features his latest installation, What a wonderful world, alongside large-scale pieces from his new series of two-dimensional works, Playroom.
In the installation What a wonderful world, items such as retro, kitschy tablecloths, secondhand tableware and lampshades, and vases filled with colorful flowers crafted from plastic models of tanks and fighter planes are arranged on a surface constructed from stacked, handmade tables.
“Images of ubiquitous everyday occurrences, events from the recent past, and fictional happenings unfold three-dimensionally, overlapping one another as if holding equal value.”
Meanwhile, in the two-dimensional Playroom series, imagery reminiscent of toy war games and video games plays out within a room randomly patterned with decorative tiles from various eras and cultures.
