Biography
1956: Born in Santiago, Chile.
1982: Moved to the United States.
1985: Received the Guggenheim Fellowship.
1986: Participated in the Venice Biennale (also participated in 2007, 2009, and 2013).
1987: Participated in the São Paulo Biennial (also participated in 1989, 2010, and 2021).
1987: Participated in Documenta (Kassel) (also participated in 2002).
2000: Received the MacArthur Fellowship.
2018: Awarded the Hiroshima Art Prize.
2020: Awarded the Hasselblad Award.
2024: Awarded the Albert Camus Mediterranean Prize.
2025: Awarded the Edward MacDowell Medal.
2025: Awarded the Prix Pictet.
Born in 1956 in Santiago, Chile. Studied architecture and filmmaking at the University of Chile. To escape the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, he relocated to New York City in 1982. He is currently based in Lisbon, Portugal. In 1986, he became the first Latin American artist to participate individually in the Venice Biennale. He has consistently participated in major international exhibitions, including Documenta (Kassel) and the São Paulo Biennial, and continues to deliver powerful social and political messages globally, as exemplified by his receipt of the 11th Hiroshima Art Prize in 2018.
