Masahiko Muto, also known as Muttoni, creates miniature, theater-like spaces powered by intricate mechanical clockwork, setting his stages within boxes of various sizes that evoke music boxes.
The artist crafts every element himself—from the figures with their melancholic expressions and the retro props to the brilliant lighting that draws viewers into a fantastical world—and brings them to life through mechanical contrivances.
His unique and unclassifiable works have garnered a wide following and have been exhibited in diverse settings ranging from art museums and galleries to commercial spaces.
After working for approximately 30 years out of an old apartment in Kunitachi City, Muto relocated his studio late last year. This exhibition marks the unveiling of his newest pieces, the first to emerge from his new creative space.
