Chiharu Shiota, born in Osaka in 1972 and currently based in Berlin, is internationally known for her large-scale installations. Her works often feature intricately woven threads stretched throughout entire spaces, as well as arrangements using numerous window panes, beds, and worn shoes. Confronting fundamental themes such as life and death with sincerity, Shiota creates works that directly appeal to the viewer’s senses.
For this exhibition, themed around the idea of the “WALL,” Shiota plans to present a new installation composed of approximately 200 used trunks collected in Berlin. Photographs and drawings will also be exhibited simultaneously.
…Under the theme of the ‘wall,’ I had been photographing structures such as the Berlin Wall and the Western Wall in Israel. But eventually my focus shifted toward the walls within my own blood — the invisible boundaries of family, ethnicity, nation, and religion contained within it. I wanted to express the human condition of being bound by these walls, unable to overcome them…
