At first glance, the works evoke a world from another dimension akin to abstract art or Surrealism; yet, upon closer inspection, concrete images such as plants and figures vividly emerge.
While playfully engaging with the fundamental contradiction of painting—compressing the world onto a flat surface—Sukigara carves out space as if “cultivating” the canvas using paint and lines.
The thickly layered paint applied as if digging into the surface and the stratified spaces expanding like the depths of facing mirrors possess a profound depth. These elements powerfully draw the viewer’s gaze into the interior of the painting and its fertile interstices.
Painting is fascinating. It depicts the non-flat on a flat surface. By folding and crushing, it compresses the world onto a flat plane.
As you go deeper with the paint, the paint piles up and rises even though you are digging. In the painting, mountains and holes become the exact same thing.
I draw a line. Like ivy, it crawls around both the inside and outside of a house. When the line closes, it becomes a solid object. The thin, hard pen tip cuts through the space.
The space is actually expanding because the line continues to cut it infinitely. Yet, the paper remains a single flat surface that appears unchanged, capable of expanding its realm by twisting and turning over.
Riding on a line I draw, I can strike poses I have never done before. I can stretch my eyes and touch my own back.
I apply paint. I connect something coming from over there with something coming from over here. When they push against each other and their forces balance out, they can float in the air, much like the game where you stand back-to-back.
Since both “over there” and “over here” are ultimately just collections of particles, I like to think that if these particles interlock perfectly, they might be able to merge or slip right through one another.
