Tajima’s past works include rolled canvas pieces titled Roll Painting, lump-like works created using paint and masking tape, and Stacking Painting, where painted canvases are layered three-dimensionally on the picture plane. Through these creations, he challenges the viewer to question the very nature of flatness in painting.

Although his approach may seem resistant at first glance, Tajima remains deeply committed to the act of “drawing” to explore his expression. He continues to produce works that render his unique theoretical perspectives into pictorial space.

Drawing Lines of Natural Numbers

Drawing Lines of Natural Numbers series began with the question: ‘How can one draw a perfect square?’

I draw lines on white paper. First, I draw a 1 mm line, leave a 1 mm gap, and then draw a 2 mm line. From then on, I continue adding lines to the composition, increasing their length by 1 mm at a time in accordance with the sequence of natural numbers.

The process is a simple repetition following a set of rules. However, even when repeatedly creating works of the exact same size, unavoidable discrepancies emerge.
