Chiharu SHIOTA

Known for large-scale installations, such as those featuring thread stretched across spaces or utilizing numerous glass windows, beds, and well-worn shoes. While sincerely confronting fundamental themes such as life and death, the artist creates works that directly appeal to the viewer’s senses.

Biography

1972: Born in Osaka, Japan.

1992–1996: B.F.A. in Painting, Kyoto Seika University.

1993–1994: Exchange student at the Australian National University, Canberra School of Art, Australia.

1996: Entered the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (University of Fine Arts Hamburg), Germany.

1997–1999: Studied under Marina Abramović at Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Braunschweig, Germany.

1999–2003: Studied under Rebecca Horn at Universität der Künste (University of the Arts), Berlin, Germany.

2010–2013: Visiting Professor, Kyoto Seika University.

2011: Visiting Professor, California College of the Arts, USA.

Currently lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
